Aescin (or escin), a saponin in Horse Chestnut, has been studied as it appears to increase circulation. Extracts of Horse Chestnut are thought to improve the tone of venous (venotonic) and arterial walls (vasotonic), decrease the permeability of capillaries and reduce swelling from excess fluid in the legs. Arzneimittelforschung 1979;29:627-5. Horse Chestnut may be helpful in reducing night related leg cramps, varicose veins and the pain and inflammation of hemorrhoids. Horse chestnut seed extract has been studied for possible use for chronic venous insufficiency. A review is found in Arch Dermatol. 1998;134:1356-1360. It is important to use only safe, pharmaceutically prepared extracts, because several parts of the plant such as the seed husks are toxic. Ginkgo Biloba is prized for its possible role in increasing circulation and oxygenation of the brain. It is thought to act as a blood thinner, blood vessel dilator and blood clot inhibitor (anti-coagulator). It has anti-oxidant properties and may help rid body of free radicals. Gotu kola (Hydrocotyle centella). Centella extract has shown impressive clinical results in the treatment of venous insufficiency of the lower limbs by improving blood flow through the limbs. Murray, Michael and Pizzarno, Joseph. ENCYCLOPEDIA OF NATURAL MEDICINE, New York, New York: Three Rivers Press, 1998. Gotu kola extract is rich in “beta-carotene, beta-sitosterol, campesterol, camphor, kaempferols, saponin, stimasterol. Nutrients include the minerals calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, zinc as well as vitamins B1, B2, B3, and C.” Balch, P. and Balch, J. PRESCRIPTIONS FOR NUTRITIONAL HEALING, New York, New York: Avery, 2000. Butcher’s Broom (Ruscus aculeatus). Long used because of apparent help in strengthening weakened leg veins and hemorrhoids (varicose veins in the rectum) by strengthening the vessel walls and aiding vasoconstriction. Butcher’s Broom has anti-inflammatory properties which may reduce damage to the vessels. It is a rich source of phytochemicals and minerals as well as vitamins B1, B2, B3. Vitamin C, Butcher’s Broom, and the bioflavonoid, Hesperidin are used together for vein health. Clinical Hemorheology 1994;14:S7-S13.
