Take an active roll in managing stress by investing in your health and making lifestyle changes. You can make investments in your health that will yield great dividends by enjoying early morning sunlight, breathing fresh air, developing healthy breathing habits, getting healthy sleep, incorporating fun exercise, and supplying the body with nutrients that support a tranquil mind and healthy body. Develop a passion for life and pass that on to others. Invest your time and thoughts into something you really enjoy. Stressed Out Over Stress. Stress can be perceived and acted on automatically by our body with or without our knowing it. When the body is confronted with stress, the brain reacts and the adrenal glands go into action. There are two adrenal glands. An adrenal gland is located on top of each of your kidneys. Adrenal glands help the body react to immediate danger. This response is called the ‘fight or flight’ response. The brain triggers the pituitary gland and the pituitary releases ACTH (adrenocorticotropic hormone) which signals the adrenal glands to produce adrenaline and cortisol. The body increases blood flow to the vital organs like heart, vessels, lungs, muscles, brain and decreases blood to skin for increased stamina and strength. The brain is at a peak level to deal with the crisis physically and mentally. Breathing and blood sugar levels increase to supply the energy needed. We have all experienced the effects of stress like pounding heart, rapid breathing, sweating, feeling tense and being charged with energy. Stress can also cause us to feel uneasy, anxious or nervous. There are many signs of stress both physical and mental. On-going chronic stress can lead to physical and mental illnesses. Physical illnesses can be an outward manifestation of unrecognized mental stress. It is important to adopt a healthy lifestyle and have a healthy immune system to combat stress. Negative Coping Mechanisms We can not always control what stresses come our way, but we can control how we respond to those stresses. Harmful adaptations to stress seem to give relief initially, but foster destructive behavior patterns. Stress is a part of life, so it is easy to develop a pattern of overeating, eating just for comfort or consuming foods which don’t support health. Negative coping mechanisms can include dependency on pain medicine, drugs, alcohol or tobacco. Withdrawing from life, sleeping too much, becoming sedentary and shallow breathing can negatively impact your health as you attempt to handle stress. Likewise, obsessive behaviors like over spending or gambling can be harmful reactions to stress. Negative thoughts, controlling behaviors and using anger to defuse stress can be counter productive as well. Stress in any form taxes the body and the immune system. Stressed No More! Some things you can not control, but you can take an active part in taking good care of yourself. While many develop ways to handle stress that hurt the body physically and emotionally, good nutrition, exercise and positive coping skills can be developed that help the body manage stress more effectively. Taking control of your mind and body helps get rid of negative feelings, anxiousness and hopelessness and builds a healthier tomorrow. SOUTHWEST LIFESTYLE and ADOBE WELLNESS!
