Passion Flower, native to the U.S., was used by
Native American Indians as well as 16th century Spaniards and others who
colonized the New World. The Spaniards thought the flower to be a symbol
of the crown of thorns placed on Christ's head during his crucifixion. Today, it is still widely relied upon
by herbalists. It is rich in flavonoids and appears to have analgesic, antiseptic, and anti-inflammatory properties.
Passion Flower
may be mildly sedative. It has been used
as a poultice for wounds and an eyewash for infections. It is thought to exhibit
antispasmodic effects as well as acting as a mild sedative and
painkiller.
Valerian
is a familiar herb used since ancient times and well known in Europe. GABA
is a chemical agent in the brain thought to increase anxiety. Valerian is
thought to bind to the neurotransmitter receptor site for GABA, thus
moderating feelings of anxiety and having a calming effect. It is widely
used as a sedative for nerve disorders, relief from intestinal cramping,
constipation and a remedy for coughs. It has a natural tranquilizing
effect and may be used as a sleep aid. It is a good source of calcium and
magnesium. "Magnesium is one of the best nutrients for sleep, particularly
in people who wake up repeatedly throughout the night. In a landmark 1976
study, 99% of 200 people treated with magnesium showed positive responses,
including reduced sleep latency, longer stretches of uninterrupted sleep,
and sense of refreshment on arising in the morning. Magnesium is also
helpful for people with night terrors and nocturnal motor automatisms,
both of which are associated with magnesium deficiencies.." Holistic

Skullcap (so called because of its
shape resembling a military helmet the colonists were familiar with, but
also called Mad-Dog Skullcap) is a
Native American plant from the Southwest, TX and Plain states. It contains scutellarin, a flavonoid,
which has used to calm and may relax the digestive tract. It maybe helpful for nervous disorders.
Hops (a vine named from an
Anglo-Saxon word hoppan meaning to climb) is used as a relaxant and
may reduce irritation and anxious feelings. It may help calm the stomach and
aid digestion. Hops are used to treat nervousness and promotes healthy
sleep. "The German Commission E monograph mentions Hops for restlessness
and anxiety, as well as disorders of sleep." Scalzo, R. and Cronin, M., Traditional Medicines from the Earth.
