 Get a good night’s sleep!

Proper Sleep is crucial because the many restorative processes go on during sleep.

Different Sleep Stages occur through the night as different physiological processes rejuvenate the body. The first phase of sleep is Stage 4 (deep-slow wave sleep phase) which lasts about an hour. “The pituitary releases high levels of growth hormone that stimulates tissue growth and accelerates healing processes. There is also a lowering of total cholesterol, but an increase in HDL.”* Stage 1 or REM (rapid eye movement) occurs in a number of 90 minute cycles through the night. Stage 2 and 3 follow REM sleep cycles (characterized by relaxed muscle tone, but no rapid eye movement). During Stage 1 (REM), “the heart and respiration rates become increasingly irregular, peripheral muscle tone is depressed, and brain activity increases markedly. This is the state in which dream activity occurs. ‘The brain is basically disengaging from motor regulation, but it is highly active. Brain metabolism may be increased by as much as 20% during the periods of REM sleep,’ according to Dr. Richard Maurer, ND.… During the course of a good night’s sleep, the body’s basal metabolic rate will decrease… Arterial pressure falls, pulse slows, vessels dilate, gastrointestinal activity increases, and a number of endocrine changes occur.”* Growth hormone and prolactin are released during proper sleep. Prolactin release can affect a woman’s fertility. So you can see why healthy sleep is important to your health and wellbeing.

We all want to wake up refreshed, energetic and mentally alert.

Sleep Disorders can rob you of optimum health. Unhealthy sleep can cause you to wake up feeling tired, sluggish, fuzzy headed, irritable and just listless through out the day. Poor sleep can be caused by illness, pain, nutrient deficiencies, stress, low adrenal function, prescription medicines, stimulants such as caffeine, poor digestion, lack of exercise, snoring, sleep apnea, alcohol, a poor sleeping environment... Tossing, turning and frequent trips to the bathroom can interrupt important sleep cycles, as well. Improper sleep weakens your immune system and causes illness.

What can be done so you can go to sleep relaxed shortly after laying down and enjoy uninterrupted healthy sleep?  Reduce stress in your life!

  • Set Up A Routine. Turn down lights. Turn off the TV. Take time to unwind-perhaps a hot soothing bath with aromatic lavender, reading or a small complex carbohydrate snack before retiring. Exercise early in the day in the sunlight promotes healthy sleep. Strenuous exercise should not be done in the evening. Don’t lay down right after eating a spicy or hard to digest meal. Don’t hamper digestion by drinking a lot of liquids with your meal in the evening. Try to reduce your liquid intake at night. One cup of Chamomile or Linden tea before retiring may have a calming effect. Create an environment that reduces stress and its accompanying anxiety.
  • Supply Nutrients. Naturally! Whole body wellness promotes restful sleep.

Inexpensive herbs such as Valerian Root, Passionflower and Hops have been used as standbys for centuries to promote sleep, because they may be calming and mildly sedative while reducing nervousness, irritation and tension. Nutrients such as magnesium, B12, 5-HTP and melatonin may aid sleep as well.

Magnesium is one of the most important sleep aids playing a role in nerve transmission. Magnesium and calcium help regulate muscle relaxation. A 1976 study showed magnesium improved the ability to fall asleep and longer periods of uninterrupted sleep. Holistic Primary Care. Spring 2005

Melatonin is known to regulate the body’s sleep/wake cycle, protect the immune system and provide antioxidant protection for the brain by stimulating the enzyme, glutathione peroxidase, which prevents free radical damage. It is a metabolic product of tryptophan which is synthesized in the pineal gland in the brain. Melatonin production occurs at night and is triggered by darkness. Production stops when the retina is exposed to light.

5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan) is produced in our bodies from tryptophan. 5-HTP is needed to produce serotonin. Serotonin helps regulate brain functions promoting healthy sleep and moderating mood. 5-HTP can be concentrated from the seeds of the African griffonia plant and may be used by the body to help regulate serotonin.
