Alternative Care for enlarged prostate, urinary flow, and improved sexual function

Benefits, Information and Uses of Prostate Health Support:
  •  stinging nette, lycopene and zinc may work together to support prostate health. Saw palmetto, pygeum, pumpkin seed
  •  Studies have demonstrated that these herbs may reduce the symptoms of an enlarged prostate, such as increasing urine output and flow, reducing painful urination, decreasing frequency of urination at night and reducing inflammation of the prostate. Lycopene may benefit the prostate by reducing cholesterol build up in the vessels.
  •  NOTE: If you have prostate problems, consult the physician before self-medicating with these herbs. While these products appear to be effective and do not have significant side effects, your symptoms may have a serious underlying cause that may need workup and treatment by a physician.

Saw palmetto has been studied because of its apparent ability to reduce symptoms of an enlarged prostate, provide improved urinary flow rate, reduce painful urination and decrease frequent urination at night. Saw palmetto has been used to improve sexual functioning and desire.

Pygeum africanum (pie-jee-um) bark of the endangered evergreen, African plum tree, has been used to reduce the symptoms of an enlarged prostratic hyperplasia (prostate enlargement).  Recent studies (at least 10 since 1990) have shown benefits of pygeum such as increased urine flow, reduced night urination and reduced residual volume. Pygeum studies have shown pygeum contains phytosterols that block the male reproductive hormone, androgen, and estrogen. Pygeum is thought to inhibit prostaglandin production.

Pumpkin Seed  (Curcurbita pepo) is native to North America and traditionally used by Native Americans. Pumpkin seeds are rich in nutrients supplying  minerals (magnesium, zinc, selenium, phosphorus, potassium, manganese, copper, iron), amino acids, proteins and certain B vitamins. It has anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties.

Stinging nettle is a well known herb in North America. It is rich in vitamin A, C and E.  Nettle root apparently decreases urine retention in the bladder and the increased frequency of urinating at night. It may act as a diuretic by increasing output and acting as an antiseptic to keep urinary tract healthy.  It is apparently effective in reducing symptoms of enlarged prostate.  Some think that nettle and pygeum may act synergistically to influence hormone levels that cause enlargement of the prostate. Nettle leaf is rich in minerals. Nettle tea acts as a diuretic and may act as an anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial agent, flushing the bladder to prevent infections.

Lycopene is a carotenoid (plant pigment) that gives tomatoes their characteristic red color. It is also found in watermelon, papaya, guava, red grapefruit, apricot and rosehip. Lycopene is highest in tomato paste and other processed tomato products such as catsup. Lycopene in food is best absorbed when heated and consumed with oil or other lipids. Recent studies have demonstrated lycopene's  benefit as a strong antioxidant that protects cells. Some scientist speculate that lycopene may be beneficial in managing cholesterol levels and may play a role in lung, liver, and skin health.

Zinc is a necessary antioxidant in every cell in the body.  It is important in reproductive health. Low levels of zinc are  implicated in an enlarged prostrate. Zinc can be depleted by prescription drugs and oral contraceptives, by disorders involving the kidneys, and gastrointestinal tract and by overuse of alcohol.

NOTE: Do not self-diagnose your prostate problem.  Consult a physician for prostate or urinary disorders, if you are experiencing problems such as difficulty in voiding, frequent urination at night or enlarged prostate. Consult a physician for treatment of BPH, benign prostratic hyperplasia (enlargement of the prostate).  PSA levels can be monitored and care and medications can be coordinated as a part of long term care for prostate health. These herbs are thought to help relieve symptoms. It is not clear if they reduce prostate size or the underlying causes.
