Note: Do not self-diagnose. Impotence, erectile dysfunction, decreased libido, urinary and prostate problems, etc. may have both physical and psychological causes. Consult AWW or your physician for prostate or urinary disorders such as difficulty in voiding, frequent urination at night or enlarged prostate. Consult a physician for treatment of BPH, benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlargement of the prostate).  Medications, lab work and care can be coordinated as a part of long term care for men’s reproductive and prostate health. Research is continuing on several well known, widely used herbs that are thought to successfully help relieve symptoms, but it is not clear if they reduce prostate size or the underlying causes. See sited research articles below.

About 50% of men over 60 years old have an enlarged prostate.

Learn More About These Helpful Nutrients:

1. Prostate Health Support. 2. Korean Ginseng. (Panax Ginseng). 3. Well For Life, Well B, Well C 4. Omega Max

1. Prostate Health Support: All-natural nutrients from the following herbs are thought to act synergistically to help your body support healthy prostate function: saw palmetto (berry), stinging nettle (root), pumpkin seeds (oil)pygeum (bark extract), and lycopene (from tomatoes and may support men’s prostrate and urinary health and sexual functions).

Saw palmetto is widely used as it is thought to help reduce symptoms of enlarged prostate. “Recent research published in the September 25, 2005 issue of the World Journal of Urology found that men with mild symptoms of bladder outlet obstruction, commonly caused by BPH, who took saw palmetto were able to halt the symptom’s progression. “The fact that it is cheap, safe and effective makes it a good choice for BPH,” Eric Yarnell, N.D., Bastyr University, Kenmore, Washington and president of the Botanical Medical Academy reported. Better Nutrition. June 2006.

Pygeum africanum (pie-jee-um) bark of the endangered evergreen, African plum tree, is thought to reduce the symptoms of enlarged prostatic hyperplasia (BPH , prostate enlargement or overgrowth of cells that is not cancerous).  Studies suggest pygeum may increase urine flow, and reduce frequency of night urination. Pygeum is thought to inhibit prostaglandin production and reduce inflammation of the prostate. According to a study June 2006 study in Planta Med., Pygeum has been used for treatment of begnign prostatic hyperplasia and prostate cancer. An androgen receptor is known to control growth of the prostate and pygeum extracts shows androgen antagonistic activity. “This compound may provide a novel approach for the prevention and treatment of BPH and PCa. (prostate cancer).” Planta Med. June 19 2006.

Recent studies have shown benefits of pygeum which may include increased urine flow, reduced night urination and reduced residual volume. Pygeum studies have shown pygeum contains phytosterols that may block the male reproductive hormone, androgen, and estrogen. Pygeum is thought to inhibit prostaglandin production.

“An increase in the ratio of estrogen to testosterone in elderly men indicates that estrogen may be involved in the development of BPH.”  This study supports the use of combinations of these two ingredients (nettle root extract and pygeum) in the treatment of BPH.” 1996 Phytomedicine. 3(2):121-128. referenced from online summary in www.herbs.org.

Pumpkin Seed (Curcurbita pepo) is native to North America and traditionally used by Native Americans. Pumpkin seeds are rich in nutrients supplying minerals (magnesium, zinc, selenium, phosphorus, potassium, manganese, copper, iron), amino acids, proteins and certain B vitamins. It has anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. Planta Med. 2006 Jun 19.

Stinging nettle is a well known herb in North America. It is rich in vitamin A, C and E.  Nettle root is thought to decrease urine retention in the bladder and the frequency of urinating at night. It may act as a diuretic by increasing output and acting as an antiseptic to keep urinary tract healthy.  It is thought to be effective in reducing symptoms of enlarged prostate. Some think that nettle and pygeum may act synergistically to influence hormone levels that cause enlargement of the prostate. Nettle leaf is rich in minerals as well. Nettle tea acts as a diuretic and may act as an anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial agent, flushing the bladder to prevent infections.

Lycopene is a carotenoid (plant pigment) that gives tomatoes their characteristic red color. It is also found in watermelon, papaya, guava, red grapefruit, apricot and rosehips. Lycopene is highest in tomato paste and other processed tomato products such as catsup. Lycopene in food is best absorbed when heated and consumed with oil or other lipids. Recent studies have demonstrated lycopene's possible benefit as a strong antioxidant that protects cells. Some scientists speculate that lycopene may be beneficial in managing cholesterol levels and may play a role in lung, liver, and skin health. “High amounts of lycopene in tomato sauce and other processed tomato products are linked to reduced risk of prostate cancer. Scientists are looking into lycopene’s potential role in slowing prostate cancer cell growth” American Institute for Cancer Research Newsletter. Summer 2006. Issue 92.

2. Korean Ginseng. Ginseng stimulates the central nervous system, and may enhance libido and aid erectile function by increasing nitric oxide levels.

NOTE: If you have prostate problems, consult the physician before self-medicating with these herbs. While these products appear to be effective and are not thought to have significant side effects, your symptoms may have a serious underlying cause that may need workup and treatment by a physician.

3. Well For Life: Well For Life is a daily multiple vitamin/mineral and herbal. Zinc is important in reproductive health. Low levels of zinc are implicated in an enlarged prostrate. Zinc can be depleted by prescription drugs and oral contraceptives, disorders involving the kidneys, gastrointestinal tract and overuse of alcohol.

Well C. Vitamin C plays a role as coenzyme in the synthesis of steroid hormones such as testosterone. The adrenal gland which helps fight stress contains a high concentration of vitamin C. Supplementation is important as Vitamin C concentration may be decreased under stress. Vitamin E is needed for normal reproduction and for integrity of the muscles and nerves.

Well B Niacin is a B vitamin that participates in breakdown of glucose for energy and in the synthesis of fat and cholesterol. Cholesterol is the raw material used for testosterone production. B vitamins help in mood management and nerve health.

 4. Omega Max   Omega fatty acids are thought to reduce inflammation. An initial study in Urology 2001; 58  reports that flaxseed (an omega fatty acid) and a low-fat diet may slow the growth of tumors in men with prostate cancer. Healthy Approach Newsletter. November 2001.

Dr. Jorge E. Chavarro reported at the annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research  that high blood levels of a trans fatty acid (‘bad’ oil AWW) found in partially hydrogenated vegetable oil were linked to an increased risk for non aggressive prostate cancer from a review of data from the Physician’s Health Study. In an article entitled “Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil Intake Found Associated With Prostate Cancer Risk,” he noted, “We can’t produce trans fatty acids, so measurements of tissue levels reflect our intake.” Family Practice News. May 15, 2006.

5. OTHER KEY NUTRIENTS

Coenzyme Q10.  When you help your heart, you not only help overall health, you help your love life, too. Coenzyme Q10 may help lower blood pressure, improve blood sugar metabolism, and boost energy.

Soy Isoflavones.  “Some research suggests that soy phytochemicals may prevent prostate cancer from becoming more advanced. In one AICR (American Institute of Cancer Research) funded study, the combination of genistein from soy and radiation therapy led to greater death of prostate cancer cells in laboratory mice. Although more research is needed, many experts believe that soy foods are safe for prostate cancer survivors to eat several times a week.” American Institute for Cancer Research Newsletter. Summer 2006. Issue 92.

Garlic. “Lab studies have shown that allium compounds in garlic may inhibit growth of prostate cancer. In laboratory studies, these phytochemicals helped retard prostate tumor growth.” American Institute for Cancer Research Newsletter. Summer 2006. Issue 92. Garlic.

OTHER NUTRIENTS THAT MAY BENEFIT MEN'S SEXUAL/PROSTATE HEALTH:

“Led by Dr. Aaron Katz, MD, (director of the Center for Holistic Urology at Columbia University. AWW) researchers there  have been studying a number of standardized plant medicines for prostate cancer, the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among American men…The formula includes (whole-plant extracts) turmeric, ginger, rosemary, holy basil (tulsi), green tea polyphenols, oregano,  skullcap, and other herbs all of which have inhibitory effects on cyclooxygenase (COX) 1 and 2 enzymes.” Holistic Primary Care. Spring 2006. Vol. 7, No. 1. High COXs levels are thought to be seen in some prostate cancers. The benefits of these herbs remain to be seen.

NOTE: If you have prostate problems, consult the physician before self-medicating with these herbs. While these products appear to be effective and are not thought to have significant side effects, your symptoms may have a serious underlying cause that may need workup and treatment by a physician.
