Natural EVENING PRIMROSE
Evening Primrose (Oenothera biennis) is a
well adapted native of the Southwest. It was used extensively by American
Indians for food. This common plant is well suited for the wet sandy
watersheds of the western plains and mountains. The oil of evening
primrose seeds contains omega-6 fatty acids which are
essential nutrients that can not be produced by the body and must be
consumed in the diet or supplements.

Benefits, Information and Uses of
Evening Primrose Oil: |
- Evening primrose oil is a
source of beneficial poly-saturated omega-6 fatty acids. Some
supplements such as gamma-linolenic acid (GLA),
linoleic acid, oleic acid and palmitic acid are combined with
evening primrose seed oil as they are thought to
support each other's functioning.
|
- Evening primrose is
thought to be important in hormone
regulation including estrogen and testosterone
production.
|
- Evening primrose is thought to increase
circulation, reduce blood pressure, possibly prevent platelet coagulation,
decrease pain and inflammation, (especially that affecting the
lungs and joints).
It may be useful for reducing PMS and menopausal symptoms.
|
- Evening primrose oil supports
healthy skin.
|
Evening primrose: Around the 1980's, research
showed the medicinal potential for the oil extracted from the seeds.
Today evening primrose oil is used by many as it is thought to be
beneficial in supporting estrogen and testosterone production, reducing
PMS and menopausal symptoms and reducing inflammation in the lungs and
arthritic joints. Evening primrose oil supports healthy skin and
is used in herbal skin preparations and in over-the-counter and
pharmaceutical cosmetics.
Gamma-linolenic acid (GLA):
GLA
is an unsaturated fatty acid that is important in the formation of
prostaglandins, which influence the production of hormones. Prostaglandins are formed from linolenic
acid and are thought to be important in preventing platelet
aggregation in blood vessels, thus may help slow hardening of the
arteries. Research suggest prostaglandins may increase circulation, reduce
blood pressure, and decrease pain and inflammation. More research is needed
to support the apparent benefit GLA may exert on autoimmune diseases.
Note: Evening primrose, Oenothera
biennis, should not be confused with plants simply called primrose, Primula
ssp!
