The carotenoids, Lutein and Zeaxanthin in LUTEIN PLUS are derived from marigold flowers (calendula officinalis). Carotenoids are pigments (colored substances like yellow beta-carotene from carrots) found in many foods and are vital for eye health. These carotenoids are precursors of Vitamin A and are thought to help the eye process light and provide protection for the eye from ultraviolet radiation and the free radical damage seen in macular degeneration and cataracts.

Bilberry fruit is rich in the antioxidants called anthocyanidins and Vitamin C, which may benefit circulation in vessels in the eyes and strengthen the connective tissue of blood vessel walls and support the retina. Anthocyanidins are stronger antioxidants than Vitamins C and E.  Bilberry is thought to play a part in lowering blood pressure and normalizing clotting of blood. More research would be warranted.
