Alternative Care for Weight Loss,
Metabolism, Stomach and Heart Health
Green tea (camellia sinensis) was
first used in China and India. Green, black and oolong tea are from the same
plant, but are processed differently. Green tea uses fresh unfermented
leaves and is about three times higher in beneficial nutrients (polyphenols
called catechins which are anitoxidants) than black tea. Oolong tea is
partially fermented and black tea is fully fermented. High in antioxidants, these catechins can be served as a beverage or concentrated in caffeine free
extract supplements. The many apparent benefits of green tea are being investigated. Green tea appears to protect liver tissue, play a role
in blood sugar regulation and may help reduce plaque build up in blood vessels. Green tea polyphenols
are anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial. Therefore, scientists think green tea may benefit those with
gastrointestinal disorders and
support bladder health. Green tea catechins are believed to lower
cholesterol and support cardiovascular health.
The catechins and caffeine in green tea warrant
research for weight loss, because of their ability to increase the body's
metabolism boosting function called thermogenesis. Thermogenesis is
responsible for body's control of cellular fat levels, increasing metabolism
and stimulating the nervous system. Some studies show green tea
influences thermogenesis without increasing heart rate or other adverse
effects. Family Practice News, February 1, 2004 pg 27
Green tea, as a beverage, acts as a
mouthwash, refreshing the breathe and killing bacteria to support healthy gums.
"Tea Extracts Show Potential Use as Antimicrobial Agents in Mouthwashes" HerbClip, July 27, 2002. Oliff, Heather
S., PhD. It contains caffeine which can serve as a stimulant to the nervous system and increase
metabolism. Catechins and caffeine work together. Tannins in green tea are
good for the stomach. Green tea contains many other nutrients as well.
