Anthocyanins are pigments that
give certain foods their color. The color of grapes, blueberries,
cranberries, pine bark, raspberries are composed of various anthocyanins.
Anthocyanins are valued for their antioxidant and antihistaminic properties.
These anthocyanins, also known as proanthocyanidins, appear to benefit connective
tissue by protecting the proteins collagen and elastin. Extracts of grape
seed and skin may help support the structural integrity of veins, thereby increasing
circulation especially of small blood vessels.
Research is warranted in the
study of the effectiveness of grape seed and grape skin extract in keeping
blood vessel walls free of plaque build up, and in improving circulatory
problems of diabetes. Studies are being done to determine the use of grape
seed extract in aiding vision problems such as cataracts and macular
degeneration. Grape seed and grape skin extracts may have anticoagulant
properties that support heart health and vessels of the lower legs.
Proanthocyanidins, also, have antihistamine properties and may help with
allergies such as hay fever (allergy to pollen).
