 BRAIN HEALTH BOOSTERS

Boost thinking skills* Improve memory*Support mental health

The brain is the highly complex command post of our nervous system. It is specialized for impulse transmission and is the seat of perception (cognitive thinking), emotions and the ability to interact with our surroundings. When you take control of your health, you support your body’s own innate ability to heal its self while promoting vitality and a sense of wellbeing.

Brain health depends on whole body health. Healthy nerve impulses depend on balanced brain biochemistry, the production of the neurotransmitters and antioxidant protection from free radical damage. The brain regulates the major systems of the body managing circulation, blood sugar levels, hormones, thyroid function, etc “Ten years ago most neuroscientists saw the brain as a kind of computer, developing fixed functions early. What we now appreciate is that the brain is continually revising itself through out life,” relates Michael Merzenich of the University of California, San Francisco, research scientist in brain plasticity. He is among those scientists who have been studying the brain’s ability to rejuvenate and maintain its functions through out life.  * National Geographic. March 2005. pg.13.

Your part in brain health includes the following:

  • 1. Providing key dietary nutrients to your body to that may help enhance memory, cognitive thinking, mood and restful sleep and to benefit certain mental disorders such as depression and anxiety which exhibit excessive feelings of sadness, fatigue, tension and nervousness. Nutrient deficiencies: Mental health is dependent on brain health and the homeostasis of all body functions (circulation, respiration, nerve transmission, digestion, regulation of sleep, pain, emotions, etc.). Key nutrients (vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, amino acids) are essential for these body functions, but can not be produced by the body and must be supplied through diet or supplements. When the body responds to stress, injury, trauma and allergies vital nutrients are depleted and toxins produced. Recent studies suggest that mental disorders can weaken your immune system and put you at risk for other health issues like heart attack. In a recent article, Dr. Gregory Miller noted that two key inflammatory agents, interleukin 6 and C-reactive protein, which are higher in depressed patients, put the depressed persons at high risk for cardiovascular disease. “Dr. Millar contended that depression promotes inflammation, which in turn, increases the risk of and mortality from cardiovascular disease.” Family Practice News. January 15, 2004. Likewise, high homocysteine levels serve as a predictor of heart disease and people with high homocysteine levels are more likely to be depressed. B6, B12 and folate help regulate homocysteine levels. Folic acid levels are often low in people with depression. Archives of General Psychiatry 2003;60:618-26.

2. Reducing stress. Stress taxes the immune system and depletes needed nutrients. The body’s response stress is to increase metabolism, release cortisol, produce adrenal hormones, boost energy output, increase cardiac output, repair cells, flush toxins from the body, fight free radical damage and increase neurotransmitters that regulate pain and emotions. All these activities deplete essential nutrients and increase toxins. Stress can originate from illness, injury, mental trauma, unhealthy lifestyle, exposure to toxins, medication, drugs or addictions. Whether illness, physical injury or mental distress, stress takes a toll on the brain.

Must have brain foods. Pure Water is a must as the body is  75% water. There are, also, vital vitamins and minerals that can not be produced by the body and must be obtained from the diet. Vitamin C helps with enzymatic reaction and tissue repair. B Vitamins are important for nerve impulse transmission, formation of neurotransmitter acetylcholine, the structural integrity of the nerve cells and the regulation of the feel good endorphins. Folate is often deficient in depressed persons. Minerals such as zinc, magnesium, calcium, manganese, calcium, lithium and chromium are crucial to the proper functioning of the brain. Calcium and magnesium have a calming effect on the brain. Zn is often deficient in those with depression. Lithium is used in certain mental disorders. Omega Fatty Acids are essential oils that every brain cell needs for proper function. DHA is a “form of omega-3 fatty acid found in fish=main components of brain synapses. DHA also makes up a large portion of the gray matter of the brain and is found in high quantities in the retina. **Neurology Reviews. January 2006. pg 41. “Tips for Better Brain Nutrition” Daniel G Amen, MD.

Tyrosine is an amino acid needed for the production of dopamine and norepinephrine. Psychopharmacology (Berlin) Sept. 4 2003.) It is important in increasing production of adrenaline and appears to help elevate mood by raising dopamine in the brain.

DHEA is a hormone precursor. “Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) replacement therapy may be efficacious in treating mild to moderate midlife depression, particularly where traditional antidepressant treatment has failed, is undesired by the patient or is not well tolerated… While DHEA is found naturally in the body as a steroid hormone secreted by the adrenal cortex, its supplement form is extracted from the barbasco root or Mexican wild yam.” * 3 Geriatric Times. November/December 2004.

Caution: We recommend that DHEA be taken under the care of a physician. We do not recommend for children or women of child bearing age.

NADH (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) is important in the regulation of neurotransmitters serotonin, nor-adrenaline and dopamine)

5-HTP is from the African plant, Griffonia, and may help regulate production of serotonin, a brain neurotransmiter.

St. John’s Wort-This herb may be effective for mild to moderate depression. People suffering from serious illness should consult healthcare professionals. Author Lisa James reviewed research articles for Energy Times, Aril, 2004 and reported, “In one carefully designed study, this herb was significantly effective (American Journal of Psychiatry 2002;159(8):1361-6), and it held its own when compared with prescription antidepressants in two other trails (Adv Ther 2002;19(1):43-52. Canadian Family Physician 2002;48:905-12). Evidence also indicates that St. John’s wort and the herb Valerian, used together, may ease the unfortunately common combination or depression and anxiety (Phytomedicine 2003;4:25-30).”) Valerian (Standby for easing mental disorders.)

SAMe is a naturally occurring sulfur compound in the body. It is thought to increase dopamine and serotonin levels needed to manage pain and balance moods. SAMe may elevate mood and well being.

Melatonin is an important part of brain health and helps regulate the body’s day/night cycle.

Herbs are Food for Thought. Herbs and herbal extracts provide flavonoids, carotenoids, antioxidants, fatty acids, vitamins and minerals. Some well known herbs are St. John’s Wort, Valerian, Griffonia (5-HTP), Wild Yam, Ginkgo biloba, Milk Thistle, Gotu cola, Black cohash, Bilberry Fruit, Grape seed extract and Ginseng. Other herbs promote natural sleep and calm nerves.
